This week, the City installed lightning detection systems at Stormie Jones Park (2700 Brasher Lane), Meadow Park (3200 Meadow Park Drive), and Generations Park at Boys Ranch (2801 Forest Ridge Drive).
These systems will provide real-time updates on severe weather in the immediate area, and include auditory and visual alerts to prompt park goers to seek shelter. The system will alert those in the park with a 10-15 second horn blast and flashing strobe light, when lightning is reported within a 10-mile radius of the unit. When a safety risk is no longer detected, the light will stop flashing and the system will give 3-5 second “all clear” siren blasts.
Please note, the volume of the sirens will be monitored and can be adjusted by City staff. Staff also sets the alert times for the system, which will be between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The lightning detection warning sounds do produce a different siren sound than the outdoor warning sirens the City activates during a severe weather situation.
